My great aunt Fern found a recipe from my great grandma Sakach and sent it to me along with a photo of her baking this delicious treat. An infinitely customizable dessert or brunch item, fill it with whatever your favorite flavors are.

Make the dough

Combine water, yeast and sugar. Allow to sit until frothy. Add eggs. Add flour and butter and mix with a dough hook until combined. Add heavy cream until a soft dough forms.

Turn out onto a floured surface and knead about a minute. Roll out to about 1/2 inch thick rectangle.

Spread with your favorite filling. Some of my favorite options:

  • Jam and nuts
  • Cinnamon, sugar and melted butter
  • Poppyseeds, sugar and melted butter and fresh cherries
  • Nutella

Roll the ends into the center so you have two rolls with a seam along the top. Brush the top with egg wash or heavy cream. I sprinkle mine with cinnamon and sugar for a sweet crust.

Cover and leave until doubled in size.

Bake

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

Once the dough has doubled, bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes.

Raise the temp to 375 degrees and continue to bake around 10-15 minutes until browned and done.

Enjoy!

The top photo is filled with homemade apple butter, pecans and craisins.

The second photo is poppyseeds and fresh cherries. I love the way this one looks like dragonfruit.

Check out my variation filled with brisket, or hamburger!
